This Week in Mason History

Mason Statue Design Approved
Funds for Sculpture Raised by Mason Community.

At 10 feet tall, he has a rather privileged position on campus, where he can view all that is happening. You’ve walked pass him scores of times, possibly taking a moment to rub his left foot for good luck. You’ve seen him wearing t-shirts, flower leis and balloons. Parents and students alike pose for photographs in front of him. He is a campus icon, but he began much, much smaller than he is today.

On December 11, 1992, the anniversary birthday of George Mason, the student-led George Mason Statue Committee approved the design for the statue. This birthday present to our university’s namesake now stands in front of the southwest entrance to the Johnson Center. The original clay maquette, or model for the statue was only 18 inches tall though. The funds for the statue were raised throughout the Mason community, and Chi Omega fraternity was the first donor for the statue.

Wendy Ross, from Bethesda, Maryland, submitted the 18 inch clay model to the committee. Ross was also responsible for sculpting the George Mason Memorial in Washington, D.C. When asked in March of this year by Mason Gazette writer Colleen Rich how she felt about students decorating the statue, Ross responded by saying that she was “amused at the creativity.” Just like George Mason University itself, great things come from small beginnings.
