When you think of hockey, different ideas come to mind depending on if you’re a fan or not. Maybe it’s the Caps or the Flyers, or maybe you just think of the puck.

  • Is Major League Baseball back?

I’ll be the first to admit, I’ve lost interest in Major League Baseball over the last few years. The same eight teams make the playoffs every year and the same two or three have the ability to challenge for the World Series. Typically, the teams that spend the most money (i.e. the Yankees, Red Sox and Phillies) have the best shot at a title. That leaves me, as fan of the Cleveland Indians, disinterested in the baseball season about midway through May. Cleveland is normally out of any sort of divisional race by that point and their main purpose over the last few years has been to act as a farm team for the Yankees and Phillies. I mean, think about it: Three out of the four starting pitchers in Game 1 of the last two World Series’ have been no more than three years removed from playing for the Tribe. It’s sickening, really. With that being said, this year’s World Series was an absolute phenomenon. The San Francisco Giants, eventual winner, has one superstar caliber player in Tim Lincecum. And he wasn’t even a part of four of the six games. Texas is relatively similar. You can make an […]

Throughout the fall semester, Cindy Wadell, associate professor in the School of Recreation, Health and Tourism, and her class of nine students have learned about all facets of sports marketing through experience. In her project-based class, Waddell has allowed her students the opportunity to explore marketing strategies in conjunction with the women’s volleyball team, without providing a budget. “They have had some real world experience,” Waddell said. “And I have been very impressed with the results.” For each volleyball match that the class has marketed, they developed a promotional theme. Most successfully, the students worked on a sponsorship game that netted 620 supporters including University President Alan Merten and his wife. “We’ve learned that you have to put in some time to get good results,” said Ludek Lhotsky, a student that Waddell described as a “superstar” in her sports marketing class. During the 2009 women’s volleyball season, attendance averaged a mere 325 supporters. However, since Waddell’s class began working with the team this season, attendance has risen to an impressive 407 fans. On Saturday evening at the Recreation and Athletic Complex, the women’s volleyball team will be competing in their last home match of the season. Waddell’s students will be […]

Coming off a season in which then junior midfielder Omolyn Davis was named All-CAA and NSCAA All-Region while helping the Mason Patriots to the nation’s top turnaround in wins, Davis spent the summer playing in the United Soccer Leagues W-League. Helping to lead the Washington Freedom Futures, Davis capped off the summer season being named to the USL’s W-League All-Star team. Davis has carried such incredible success into the Patriots’ 2010 campaign, leading Mason with nine goals and nine assists. Her contributions have stretched far beyond the stat sheet, however, as Davis has helped lead the Patriots to an 11-7-1 record this season. Entering the last regular season game of her college career, Davis had a chance to lead her team to its first CAA Tournament since 2007. Coming off a thrilling two overtime win on Oct. 24 in which sophomore forward Tiana Kallenberger scored the game-winning goal on an assist from Davis. On Friday afternoon, Davis and her teammates were in control of their own destiny. A win would mean a step closer to the tournament while a loss would require help from other conference opponents in order to get in. Davis came up big again in Friday’s win […]

Over the last two weeks, George Mason men’s soccer has gone from a 0-3-1 conference record, tied for last in the conference, to a 3-3-2 record, tied for fifth with Old Dominion and Hofstra. While William & Mary sits atop the conference with a 6 point lead and a 6-1-1 record, Mason has been looking to get in playoff contention with their recent play. Going into their game against Delaware, both teams were tied with a 2-3-1 record. While Mason had the clear advantage in shots, 17-10, but only four of those shots were on goal to Delaware’s three. No one player on Mason’s side had more than one shot on goal. The real star of the game was the freshman goalkeeper Sean Core who recorded a clean sheet for his fifth shutout of the season. Playing Northeastern, Cote picked up another clean sheet with the help of his defense. Mason had a late goal in the game to seal the win. Senior midfielder Brent Brockman shot for the score from the corner of the box. Freshman midfielder Alex Herrera and junior midfielder Ryan Gracia were credited with assists.
